DESCRIPTION:The Crucible\nby Arthur Miller written in the 1950s high-lighted the atrocities of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and used primary source documents/real names to play out on stage these violent killings. \n\nIn the Puritan town of Salem\, Massachusetts\, the town minister\, Reverend Parris\, discovers his daughter Betty\, niece Abigail\, and other girls ‘dancing’ in the forest with his slave Tituba. Betty faints in fright at being discovered and reprimanded\, thus the girls begin to claim the devil possessed them to do it. They accuse any adults in the town with whom they disagreed of being witches. \n\n“From time to time\, we human beings have periods of moral panic that overtakes us.” \n\nThe Crucible is one such timeless telling. While it focuses on the literal witch hunts\, it is also an allegory for any number of misguided crusades through the ages\, including ominous opinions against select groups of people in our current state of the world.
