The Electrical Life of Louis Wain 

Presented as part of the Brentwood Art Trail 2025 and will include an introduction to the film by a local artist.

The extraordinary true story of eccentric British artist Louis Wain (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose playful, sometimes even psychedelic pictures helped to transform the public’s perception of cats forever. Moving from the late 1800s through to the 1930s, we follow the incredible adventures of this inspiring, unsung hero, as he seeks to unlock the “electrical” mysteries of the world and, in so doing, to better understand his own life and the profound love he shared with his wife Emily Richardson (Claire Foy).

Gil Pender (Owen Wilson) is a screenwriter and aspiring novelist. Vacationing in Paris with his fiancee (Rachel McAdams), he has taken to touring the city alone. On one such late-night excursion, Gil encounters a group of strange — yet familiar — revelers, who sweep him along, apparently back in time, for a night with some of the Jazz Age’s icons of art and literature. The more time Gil spends with these cultural heroes of the past, the more dissatisfied he becomes with the present.

Eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (Timothy Spall) lives his last 25 years with gusto and secretly becomes involved with a seaside landlady, while his faithful housekeeper (Dorothy Atkinson) bears an unrequited love for him.

This film screening is part of the Brentwood Art Trail 2021 and will include an introduction about the life and work of J.M.W. Turner by local artist Lucia Hardy. Lucia Hardy is an artist from Harold Wood, painting expressive and dynamic birds, wildlife and wild British landscapes. Lucia is inspired by nature’s strength, resilience and the struggle to balance darkness and joy in life. Lucia has exhibited her art in a number of prestigious locations, and this is her first time at the Brentwood Art Trail. You can see Lucia’s work in the windows of Oaktree Gallery and The Paper Station in Ingatestone.

This is the Academy Award winning true story of Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek) and her husband Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), the larger-than-life painters who became the most acclaimed artists in Mexican history, and whose tempestuous love affair, landmark journeys to America, and outrageous personalities made them legendary.

This film screening is part of the Brentwood Art Trail 2021 and will include an introduction about the life and work of Frida Kahlo by local artist Sue Mills. Sue Mills is a local artist and art teacher, who enjoys working in a wide range of materials including alcohol inks, charcoal and pastels, creating works that range from abstract to portraits. Sue has exhibited at the Brentwood Art Trail numerous times and you can see her work in the window of Piccola in Brentwood High Street this year.
