To protect him from Rome’s corruption, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) sent him to Numidia. However, when General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) invades, Lucius is captured and forced back to the gladiatorial arena.

Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) gathers the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders from around the world, including the US candidate Bellini (Stanley Tucci), Tedesco (Sergio Castellitto), a more traditional Italian. A more powerful American, Tremblay (John Lithgow), the increasingly popular Nigerian Adeyemi (Lucian Msamati) and the mysterious contender Benitez (Carlos Diehz), who has been working in Kabul. However, once they are all locked together in the halls of the Vatican, Lawrence (Fiennes) uncovers a trail of deep secrets which could shake the foundations of the Roman Catholic Church.
