Pygmalion

Time: 8:00pm (2:30pm Saturday Matinee)

Price: £12 / £9.50 conc.

Pygmalion both delighted and scandalised its first audiences in 1914. A brilliant witty reworking of the classical tale of the sculptor who falls in love with his perfect female statue, it is also a barbed attack on the British class system and a statement of Shaw’s feminist views. In Shaw’s hands the phoneticist Henry Higgins is the Pygmalion figure who believes he can transform Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl, into a duchess at ease in polite society. The one thing he overlooks is that his ” creation” has a mind of her own!

The Comedy of Errors

Shakespeare’s farcical comedy comes to vintage Hollywood!

Brentwood Shakespeare Company would like to welcome you to our 2018 production of The Comedy of Errors! Whether or not you are familiar with the Bard’s earliest comedy we can promise you a fun and entertaining evening. Set in the Hollywood of the late silent movies/early talkies, this whacky story – about two sets of identical twins, mistaken identities, a quest, and love – is bound to make you smile. With live music and colourful costumes, this fanciful production promises a great night out.

About Brentwood Shakespeare Company

BSC was formed in 1994 – when the dream of a few individuals, that people in the community would bring Shakespeare to life in the wonderful acting space of  Brentwood Theatre, began. Their aim was for productions to be of the highest standard, concentrating on just one production each year. We are working very hard to ensure The Comedy of Errors lives up to the founders’ dream.

BSC holds open auditions each year to ensure freshness in the company. Actors from a wide area audition for parts – sometimes they have worked with us before but often not. This year’s company is a good mix of old and new.  We hope you will find our show magical and unforgettable …

Adapted by Rob Bettinson from the novel by Catherine Cookson

Ad Hoc Players

Set in 1910, this is the simple yet evocative story of one family’s fight for physical and moral survival in the poverty of the Tyneside dockland slums.

Set in 1910, this is the simple yet evocative story of one family’s fight for physical and moral survival in the poverty and squalor of the dockland slums of Tyneside. At the centre of the tale of tragedy, humour, intrigue and love, is the apparently impossible love affair between rugged docker John O’Brien and Mary Llewellyn, a schoolteacher.

Directed by Wendi Sheard.

Ladies in Lavender

Price: £13 / £11.50 conc.

Hutton Players present a poignant drama with humour set in a Cornish village in 1936.

A small village in Cornwall.  Two sisters live in their cottage.  The year is 1936.

Village life is smooth and calm for the sisters, the local doctor and the rest of the inhabitants.

New arrivals come from outside to disturb the rhythms of village life.  For the sisters, the arrivals raise questions about how they have spent their lives and what fulfillment there has been for them.

This play is a touching and poignant story of women, questioning their lives and feelings of emptiness.

The tale was originally a short story that was turned into a film starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith.  It has now been rewritten as a hugely popular play which produces very moving moments from a drama with a large amount of humour.

Produced in association with Samuel French.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Brentwood Arts Council.

The London Lasses and Chris O’Malley – in concert

Price: £12 / £10 conc.

IMDL (Irish Music and Dance in London)

This internationally renowned band deliver a wealth of traditional songs and tunes from all over Ireland.

Internationally renowned band, The London Lasses deliver a wealth of traditional material from all over Ireland, including songs in Irish and English, plus the full gamut of Irish dance tunes, from the venerably ancient to the newly composed. The London Lasses celebrated their tenth anniversary in 2010 with the release of their fourth album ‘By Night and By Day’ with Pete Quinn and in 2015 released their 5th album ‘The One I Loved the Best’ with Leeds pianist/ guitarist, Chris O’Malley.

‘One of the best bands on the scene today’ Irish Music Magazine

‘The best female group in Irish music is The London Lasses. Easily. No debate. Incredible musicians and singers.’ Irish American News

Over the past seventeen years the band have been delighted to bring their music to some of the world’s most prestigious festivals and concert halls, including Cambridge Folk Festival, the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Glastonbury, Dublin City Hall, Philadelphia Irish Festival, Lord Mayor of London’s St Patrick’s Festival at Trafalgar Square and the Royal Albert Hall, where they performed the first ever BBC Proms céilí as part of the 2008 season and supported The Chieftains on their 50th Anniversary tour. They have been included on the ‘Ultimate Guide to Irish Folk’ double CD, released by ARC Music in February 2014. TV and Radio appearances have included TG4’s ‘Hup’ and ‘Geantraí’, BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’, BBC Radio Oxford, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Clare FM and more.

The London Lasses are:
Karen Ryan (fiddle, mandola, banjo, whistle),
Elaine Conwell (fiddle),
Elma McElligott (flute, saxophone, whistle, backing vocal),
Brogan McAuliffe (concertina),
Brona McVittie (vocal, harp),
with Chris O’Malley (piano, guitar)

As with all of their releases to date, The London Lasses’ 5th album The One I Loved the Best (recorded with Chris O’Malley plus guests and released in 2015) received much critical acclaim:

‘The One I Love the Best will vault these musicians into the spotlight once again with a renewed focus and vigor. As usual, The London Lasses have brought a winner.’
Chicago Irish News

‘It’s an invigorating blend, to be sure, and their already superbly infectious and spirited musicianship scores even higher on the excitement scale when augmented at various points by guest musicians’ FATEA

‘One of the strengths of The London Lasses is their ability to vary the instrumental line–up, and this is aided here by guests on button box, flute and harp. Switching between fiddles, flutes and free reeds, and adding banjo and saxophone on a couple of tracks, allows them to embrace several different styles of Irish music’ Irish Music Magazine

‘The London Lasses have been producing good quality music from the London Irish scene for 15 years now, and in many ways are synonymous with that scene. This is their fifth album and, yet again, they have produced just over an hour’s worth of Irish music and song they can be proud of.’ The Living Tradition

The Searchers & Hollies Experience

Price: £12 / £10 conc.

The Searchers and Hollies Experience……..The best of both worlds

The Searchers and Hollies Experience……..The best of both worlds performed by the FOD Band brings to the stage the magical hits of these two legendary harmony bands. Bringing back memories of the most high energy decade in pop music history. Let the haunting melodies transport you to that exciting era when millions of records were sold.

The Searchers, from Liverpool, made their debut with the rise of MerseyBeat. Their very first recording, ‘Sweets For My Sweet’ went to number 1. This was followed at No.2 by their third single, ‘Sugar And Spice’. They then went on to have many more memorable chart hits. Who can forget `Needles And Pins’ and ‘When You Walk In The Room’.They had many other hits and became part of the British invasion of the American charts alongside The Beatles.

The Hollies, from Manchester, were also pushed forward with the rise of MerseyBeat as they played many of the same venues as the Mersey groups . The Hollies are known as the most successful British singles band ever – having had chart hits in every decade since the 60`s. Catchy, melodic tunes are their trademark and they have had phenomenal chart success. ‘Stay’, ‘I Can’t Let Go’ , ‘Bus Stop’, ‘Sorry Suzanne’, ‘He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother’,’Here I go Again’, ‘Just One Look’ and the haunting ‘Air That I breathe’ are just a few of their hits.

The FOD Band. The Searchers and Hollies Experience is performed by the FOD Band who have been together since 1983. They have a particular insight into the Searchers music having backed Tony Jackson, the original lead singer of The Searchers. When Tony Jackson returned to performing in the 90’s, The FOD Band were selected by Tony to back him under ‘The Tony Jackson Group’ banner. The FOD band have also appeared with Eric Haydock`s Hollies, a band that Eric Haydock, the original Hollies bass guitarist formed in the 1990’s. FOD love the harmonies and the melodic material these groups recorded, and this is what motivated them to combine the two group’s hits into this exciting 2 hour show – featuring over 30 hit songs.

It is an incredible back catalogue of hits. It is a show guaranteed to have you in ‘Needles and Pins’ with nostalgia as soon as you ‘Walk in the room’. It is definitely worth ‘Just one look’ and you will say ‘Here I go Again’ I feel that ‘I’m Alive’ when hearing these melodic hits. So if you are thinking about booking tickets just say ‘Yes I will’ after all you do not want to be saying ‘I’m Sorry Suzanne’ I missed it!
